OBEDIENCE TRAINING
We follow 3 easy rules when training a dog for obedience. Clear, Kind, and Quick.
CLEAR: The command word is always the same, the behavior is expected to occur immediately, and the behavior must be maintained until the dog is released from command. So many times we see owners tell their dog to "sit" and then do nothing when the dog is not sitting, but instead running, jumping, or completely ignoring them.
KIND: There is no reason to yell at your dog. The command is spoken in a clear, neutral voice one at a time.
QUICK: If the dog does not respond immediately then the correction comes. The correction needs to be delivered quickly and then released quickly. The correction is followed by praising your dog. This allows us to form a stronger bond between the dog and the trainer.
THE COMMANDS
HEEL: A good on leash basic obedience program involves a solid heel command. Heel means that the dog is by the trainer's side with their head titled up and the leash loosely hanging. The dog must follow quickly and smoothly no matter which direction the trainer turns.
SIT: The dog sits quickly right next to the trainer. If the leash is dropped and the trainer walks away from the dog, the dog is not allowed to get up unless the trainer commands him to.
DOWN: The down works the same way as sit. When the command is given the dog drops to a down immediately and remains there no matter what distractions may occur.
RECALL: The recall is a command that teaches the dog to get up from a down position and come towards the trainer and sit directly in front of the trainer.
All dogs are capable of learning basic obedience. All dogs are also capable of learning how to stop behavior problems. The most important thing in training a dog is to continue the training when he or she is home. The dog must continue to learn when he is finished training with us.
LESSONS
There are two ways we train your dog. You can board your dog with us for the duration of the training, or you can drop them off in the morning, and pick them up in the afternoon.
Lessons vary in time because each dog is different. We work with the dog until the dog is done. There are no set number of lessons. We respect each dogs ability to learn and do not pressure them.
